Dear Families,
News from
the Pines
February 3, 2006

Dear Families,
It was good to back at school after a
week’s
illness. The children were in great
hands with Ruth Bauman and Connie Olson as substitute teachers. We have had a couple of cases of strep throat
in the classroom, so please be aware of that.
Everyone seemed in good health today.
Today we will be performing the Readers’
Theater, “To
Drill or Not to Drill,” at our All School Gathering.
Several of the students from the Pines and
Maples were actively involved in writing the play.
Others chose to write persuasive letters (pro
and con) about the possibility of drilling in ANWR, while others did
independent or partner projects. You
will have a chance to see our play and view our banners and posters if
you come
to the A.S.G. This is the culminating
event in our study of ANWR. The children
have done a great job of presenting both sides of the issue.
Fractions have been our focus during math
workshop
the past two weeks. We used geoboards as
a visual tool to begin our study, but most of the work this week was
done
without them. In our lesson today
students were given a proper fraction and then had to visualize and
draw the
whole. This will prepare them for adding
and subtracting fractions. Our next math
work will be with perimeters and area.
During writer’s workshop we are taking
some time to
write comics. We are using paper that
has three to four scenes on each page.
This has been very popular with the children, and many
creative comics
are being produced. Our next focus will
be poetry during writer’s workshop.
Today our December student council will be
hosting a
winter carnival during recess. Hot cocoa
will be served and several winter activities. (sled pulling and
sliding, sack
races, snowflake making, etc.) will be offered.
We are in need of new sleds. We
only
have a few usable ones left, so if you have any to donate that would be
greatly
appreciated.
The Pines have been studying artists such
as Degas
and Cezanne in their weekly art lessons with Andy.
They are busy making still life drawings,
learning how to use shading to give their drawings depth and shape.
Thank you for attending conferences. I still have a couple to make up from my
absence earlier in Jan. It’s so
rewarding to have the children share their portfolios.
Have a great weekend!
