PRAIRIE CREEK SCHOOL CELEBRATES COMMUNITY

Prairie Creek Community School hosted its third annual Community Tea on Tuesday, December 7.  Over 50 community members, grandparents, and special friends attended.

“We were just overwhelmed by the turn out!” said Caroline Jones, the school’s director, “Building community is central to our mission.  It was so wonderful to have so many friends and elders with us today.”

Everyone participated in the day’s planning.  Kindergarteners and first graders made the table decorations, second and third graders created favors and welcomed guests as they arrived, and the fourth and fifth graders designed invitations which the teachers delivered by hand to community members.  All of the classes baked the cookies that were offered to guests by student council servers.  “The students really look forward to sharing their school.  They take the preparation for the tea very seriously,” observed Laura Medwetz, a second and third grade teacher.

Guests were entertained by classes singing, dancing, and performing the students’ Orff music compositions.  Many also visited classrooms and participated in lessons.

“Community people look forward to the tea,” said Jones, “It’s really becoming a tradition.”
