The
principal goal of education...should be creating men and women who are
capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other
generations have done.”
- Jean Piaget
Teachers at Prairie
Creek encourage children to think flexibly and creatively. As
mathematicians, students discuss many different ways to find a
solution. Science explorations help students develop their own
hypotheses and design their own experiments.
imaginative
play and work
Walk
into Prairie Creek and one of the first things you will see is the art
of children. You might find a group rehearsing a play they have
written. You will certainly find an author or two busily scribbling
away. Visit at recess and you’ll likely be invited into one of the many
forts in the woods. There, students have created an entire world,
complete with legends, corncob “money,” and mud pie bakeries.
celebration
of the arts
The
arts are not “extra” at Prairie Creek - they are central to the
learning process. Each week, children follow their artistic
interests in ninety-minute art studios and eighty minutes of music
instruction. There, they learn to express themselves with instruments,
song, and dance. Yearly art residencies bring more experiences to our
children.
Prairie
Creek children learn to communicate creatively. Prairie Creek students
share their knowledge through writing, drama, sculpture and painting.
They challenge each other to find new solutions. We marvel at
children’s ability to re-invent their world - and ours.
