“Education
is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”
- John Dewey
Prairie Creek is a
progressive school. You will not find rote workbooks, nor neatly
arranged desks. You will not find teachers lecturing while children
follow along in their textbooks. You will not find lists of facts to
memorize. What you will find are inquisitive, engaged children who have
a passion for their work and a genuine love of learning.
real learning
At Prairie Creek Community School, we believe as John Dewey did that
students construct their understanding of the world from genuine
experiences. Students learn math as they run a coffee house or sell
newspapers. They become scientists as they design a bird feeding
station and observe it through the seasons.
Teachers at Prairie Creek respond to the interests of their students.
Our curriculum is called ‘emergent’ because it grows out of the
passions of the classroom community. Children love learning because
they are learning what they love.
focus on children’s
interests
We provide experiences that create lasting memories and lasting
understanding. Children learn because their work is real; they can see
the value of their thinking and their knowledge.
flexible teaching
We know that children learn in a variety of ways. Our teachers
are creative thinkers, well-versed in child development and learning
differences. As a team, they create a learning environment in which all
children are excited by learning and realize their full potential.
