“Trying
to be number one and trying to do a task well are two different
things.”
-
Alfie Kohn

At Prairie Creek, we believe life-long learning is
nurtured by reflection, not extrinsic rewards. In that spirit, we do
not have formalized grades, report cards, or shiny stickers affixed to
student work. Students and parents work with teachers to set realistic
goals in all areas of development. Students use portfolios to record
their work pursuing these goals.
high expectations
Goal setting is done individually so that each student can strive for
his or her personal best. Children are expected to grow and learn
every day. Students do not sit back because they are “ahead,” nor do
they give up because they are too far behind. Each child is successful
as long as he or she is learning.
critical thinking
Students at Prairie Creek ask questions. They want to know why things
are. They read, write, and wonder. They solve problems together and
communicate their solutions. This is the kind of work they expect of
themselves and their peers.
supported learning
All students need support in order to achieve at their highest level.
Prairie Creek teachers, staff, mentors, and parents work together to
make sure every student excels. Our special education teacher and
classroom teachers work together to insure that all children succeed.
In progressive education, we set the highest expectation for children:
they must become the best learners they can be.
